In the mountains tonight
someone is trailing upwards
towards the cross that
they fenced off from the people—

carved bones intersecting
into something less holy
than an idling car in a closed garage

but more than the ladies
in their Pussycat glamour
walking down Colfax

until the sun sits up again.

Once we tried for resurrection—

coupled our insides with the air
& tied them off in the atmosphere
like lead filled balloons

that never forgot how to fly.

Once we ripped ourselves clean—

found snakes dangling
between our legs

& halos of rust around our joints
that we peeled off as easily
as yarn dolls pulling into one

long, sad string.

I don’t know when we
got so lost in the forest—

whipping the wind’s face
with our own

& breathing the trees’ respirators
in all that blank space—

but I still remember
when we drove all night
trying to reach the artifact

glowing like salvation

on the mountainside.
a memory from last year.

there is an illuminated cross
on a mountainside here--
we spent most of the night
driving around
trying to reach it.

it was impossible, really--
always around another bend.

Sounds like a fun night :)

I enjoy the imagery in this one.
Particularly like lead filled balloons
that never forgot how to fly.

It was, although frustrating haha. We finally figured out that you actually can't get to the cross-- it's fenced off.

I liked that part too. Thank you. :)

Yes I can imagine it would be terribly frustrating lol and gotcha! That makes sense too I suppose, trying to stop people from defacing it.

You're welcome lovely.

Yeah, exactly. And trying to keep kids from climbing up on it. Like, you know, we wanted to. ;)
